When giving birth, the skin and muscle between your vagina and back passage can get torn. Or the doctor or midwife may need to make a cut (called episiotomy) to help your baby out. It's not always possible to avoid a tear or cut. But there are things you and your doctor or midwife can do to reduce your chances of having a tear or cut.
