Bruises, strains & sprains - Prevention

There are various things you can do to help avoid bruises, sprains and strains, such as:
- always warm up before exercise. This prepares your muscles for the action ahead and reduces the chance of injury. It also stretches ligaments, making joints more flexible and less liable to injury
- take care when lifting or bending. Make sure you bend your knees and keep your back straight when you lift anything heavy, and never twist while you lift. Hold the object close to your body, and if you need to push a heavy object, do so by leaning against it with your back rather than pushing it with outstretched arms
- future back injuries are more likely to be prevented if you strengthen your back muscles with appropriate exercises
- take extra care when walking on uneven or slippery surfaces
- if you’ve injured your ankle, it may be weak for some time afterwards, so avoid wearing high-heeled shoes until it is completely better
- when the injury recovers, gently begin to exercise the affected muscles.
