Bites & stings - When to seek medical attention

Author

In certain situations it’s always wise to see your GP immediately. For example:

  • if you've been bitten by an animal
  • if you’ve never had a course of tetanus injections
  • if you develop a fever or illness within three months of returning from a country affected by malaria. It’s important that you see your GP as soon as you develop the fever or illness, even if you took antimalarial tablets. Tell your GP where you’ve been travelling and that you may be at risk of having malaria
  • if you suffer a severe allergic reaction – usually following a wasp, bee or jellyfish sting
  • if you’ve had problems with bites and stings in the past
  • if you’re stung in the mouth or throat
  • if you develop dizziness or breathing difficulties after being bitten or stung.
