Bites & stings - Prevention

Author

There are several things you can do to help minimise the risk of being stung. For example:

  • don’t approach any animals you don’t know or don’t trust
  • use insect repellent to protect against insect bites, especially when you’re sitting or eating outside on a summer evening
  • don’t scratch insect bites as this can increase the risk of infection
  • if you know you’re particularly sensitive to insect bites, cover your arms and legs whenever you’re outside
  • avoid eating sweet and sticky foods and drinking sugary drinks outside during the summer as they attract wasps and other stinging and biting insects. If you’re drinking from a can, using a straw can help to prevent attracting insects
  • cover your arms and legs if you're out at dusk.
